Tips on Relieving The Pain of Canker Sores

Posted .

Canker sores are small white or gray sores in the mouth that have a red border. They typically cause a great deal of pain and irritation. Unfortunately, there isn’t a treatment available for the sores, but there are things you can do to relieve the pain. Our dentist, Dr. Peter Karsant, is happy to help you relieve the pain by recommending that you do a few things. Those things include:

-Using over-the-counter topical anesthetics that are meant to numb the sore and surrounding area

-Using antimicrobial mouthwashes (This should provide temporary relief)

-Avoiding hot, spicy and acidic foods and drinks (These products tend to irritate the sore)

-Talking to your dentist about antibiotics or about oral bandages that can reduce the chances of secondary infection

The most common culprits of canker sores include immune system problems, bacteria or viruses. Sometimes the sores form when there is trauma to the tissues, such as biting your cheek or if your orthodontic appliance rubs the tissues wrong. The sore should heal on its own within one or two weeks. The sore isn’t contagious and it isn’t something to worry too much about.
